Guides / Buying a lift

How much does a home lift cost in Australia?

Our home lifts start from $41,000 installed, plus GST if it applies, for the compact Swift Lite. This guide covers the price of each model, what moves the price up or down, the building works to budget for, and the running costs once the lift is in.

Home lift prices by model

These are our starting prices, installed, plus GST if applicable. They cover the lift and its installation, and the final figure depends on how your lift is configured.

The Orion residential lift is priced on request. Building works and site preparation are separate from the lift price, and are covered further down.

  • Swift Lite, the compact Swift: from $41,000
  • Phoenix Residential, built in Brisbane: from $44,000
  • Gemini, a compact external lift built in Brisbane: from $45,000
  • Swift Pro, our top residential lift: from $51,000

What changes the price

Configuration moves the price more than anything else. Two lifts of the same model can land at quite different figures once the levels, size and finishes are settled.

  • Levels and travel: the Gemini travels up to 4m, the Phoenix 7m, the Orion 8m and the Swift range 12m, serving up to 6 levels
  • Car size: the Swift comes in 6 sizes, from a 2 person car at 830 x 600mm up to a wheelchair sized car at 1400 x 1100mm
  • Inside or outside the house: an external lift needs a shaft built for the weather
  • Pit depth: the Swift needs 50mm or none at all, the Phoenix and Gemini 100mm, and the Orion 150mm
  • Finishes, doors and controls

Building works: what to budget for

We do not carry out building works ourselves, so this is a cost from your builder, separate from the lift. It varies greatly from one home to the next.

In a new build, the lift can be incorporated in the design from the start, so the shaft, the floor openings and the power are part of the build rather than an alteration later on.

In a retrofit, building works start from approximately $5,000 for a simple penetration through the floor, and rise from there for complex renovations. The shallow pit on the Swift range helps, because it avoids excavating a pit, which is where retrofit costs tend to blow out.

Send us your plans and we will quote from them. Our free engineering drawings give your builder the shaft dimensions, pit and headroom, and the electrical requirements, so the building works can be priced properly too. We can also recommend builders who specialise in lift shafts and site preparation.

GST exemption and NDIS

A lift installed to assist someone with limited mobility can be GST free under current ATO rulings. You will need a medical certificate or statement from a registered health professional, or documentation showing the lift is for disability access, and our team can help with the paperwork.

Aussie Lifts is also an NDIS registered provider, number 4050019140. Where a lift forms part of a home modification plan, we can work alongside your plan manager and occupational therapist.

Running costs after installation

We recommend servicing a home lift every 12 months. A standard residential service starts from $499 incl. GST in the Brisbane region, and for clients further out we group nearby jobs into one service run to keep the travel down.

The Swift range carries 5 years on the lift and 10 years on the drive. Spare parts are held in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and South Australia, and because we build the Phoenix, Orion and Gemini ourselves, we can still make parts for lifts we built 25 years ago.

How long it takes

The Swift range is supplied and installed from 8 weeks, and the lifts we build in Brisbane from 10 weeks. Once the site is ready, our installers are on site for 2 to 5 days, depending on the model.

A lift or a move?

If stairs are becoming the problem, a lift is often the more affordable way to stay in the home you love. Weighed against agent fees, stamp duty and the cost of moving, the numbers can come out in its favour, before you count what it means to stay put.

Aussie Lifts has been building and installing lifts in Australia since 1995, and has installed more than 7,000. Ring 1800 287 543 or send us your plans, and we will give you a figure for your home.
